Standard practice I've always used has been to evacuate for an hour or two then leave on the gauges and keep a check on the vacuum for another hour. If it drops in reading within that hour you have a leak. (There is a system whereby the vacuum pump can be used to both test for moisture or leaks but ...

A couple of points I don't think have been covered are these. A 16V compressor is a 7 piston pump which has the specs of "Running 6000 rpm changedown 8000" and is usually designated by a number such as 709 as its model. The 8 valve has a 5 piston pump with specs; "Running 4000rpm, cha...

I once bought a car (many moons ago) that had sat on blocks in a garage for years. The mileage was ridiculously low, the car was as it came off the showroom floor. When I pulled the dipstick it had a line etched in it from the top of the oil and when it later had engine work, it also had a line etch...

Re: trailer

its more about a challenge than a requirement! hydraulic car trailer, now that would be interesting! Now there is a thing :D My local citroen nut Bob Wilding Autos many years ago built a CX or GS , can't remember now, pick up/car trailer. It basically had the rear end sytripped off and made intpo a...

roscco, you where talking about taking the middle box out, alan is talking about taking the REAR silencer and replacing it with a straight through box. I've gone the straight through rear box method, and it's not made too much noticeable noise difference until on cam. Don't remove the front box, it...

I did it on mine one day just for the hell of it. It seems to cause the car to drum at a bit of speed and the exhaust blowing out the back was shooting out so fast even at idle, it sounded like a gunshot and was almost strong enough to blow your hat off.  I couldn't get mine back on q...

I've got a mate over here whose made up a few out of aluminium (to lessen the chance of an accidental disaster) and we came to the conclusion that we made the thick end about 10mm longer, then drilled them and fitted key rings into each. With his own set, he ties a piece of bright ribbon between the...

You may have misunderstood the quoted post Adrian. (I have the advantage of having spoken personally to him) The BEST the ute got was that 9L/100 klms (31 mpg) but the 16V averaged 7/8 L/100 klms. (35 - 40 mpg) and the ute was empty. I know the roads they travelled over and they are better suited to...

A bit off topic I know, but when comparing "modern" cars to our supposedly "outdated" ones, there was this write up by a guy over here. As he was going to be so far from home and was in my locality as his destination/halfway mark, he kept in touch with me in case of emergency and...

Whatever you decide to do, DO NOT under any circumstances, try to start that engine!! I could imagine a 7 year old cambelt being about as strong as a strip of liquorice. If it were to be started (if it got that far) and that belt snaps, there goes the good engine and the value of the car. I'm not in...

The grand finale is that they "crashed" the sale after the vendor spent 4.5 hours on the phone to the US which meant that they had to refund the money to the buyer. At that point, they then organised payment through their respective banks instead of this dodgy Yank outfit and the sale will...
