leads dont test just by looking! clean and no kinks or bend marks is good, but do a resiatnce test should all be 8 to 20K ohms.

Adrians right about not messing with retracteables but I think that the ones from a Xantia are at the same angle and would neatly solve the problem, also any misalignment in angle would make them more prone to lock on would it not? rather than less likely? in which case better anchored not less?

Had similar, they generally only twist under load if the rod is bent, which happens when fast fit clutch changers lever them off in the middle! never actually adjusted one just put them back as they come off - neat trick to crimp them for extra life tho
