Bro in laws 16v inpounded by the Police

Post by Jezziebx16v »

 Not a good day for my Brother in law today. He was driving the valver home from work and was escorted by a Police motorcycle into a temporary vehicle check point, bearing in mind he had no front bumper on his car and the number plate was in the windscreen I guess he was a prime target.
Anyway they gave his car a good going over and found the front tyres below the legal limit and wern't overly happy about the lack of a front bumper, so at this point he is already in the brown and smelly. Next up is an insurance check, for which the PNC reveals the car is uninsured. The motor traders policy that he thought he was insured was invalid due to the 16v being registered in has name rather than the policy holders name.
So he now has 6 points on his licence and a fine for driving an uninsured car, think the police took pity and over looked the tyres, oh and the worst part the car has been taken to a storage facillity awaitin further instructions, but in all honesty he cant afford to pay all that needs paying to get it back, likely case is it's going to get crushed.
I cant condone the tyre's situation but he genuinely thought he was insured, but I guess ignorance is not an excuse.

As I said at the start, not a good day for him not helped by the fact it's his birthday today.

thats really crappy! I've been pulled over by local roadside patrols (when in the BX at least) but so far never been 'examined' thank god!

How much is the storage and recovery tax? Can he find out who deals witht he 'scrap' and buy it back post dispatch from the compound? Round here i know the three companies that deal with impound cars and they will usually cut very good deals if they can't make much on the car its self!

So he tells me, its £150 for the tow away then £20 per day storage but he now has to re MOT the car before he is allowed to use it( evan though it has 9 months left) also he needs to have the car recovered back to his home address from the storage place as it is not insured.
All these things put together add up to a fair amount of money which he does not have  and now he has 6 points won't be able to afford the insurance anyway. Sad thing to say but it's probably the end of another 16v.

Have you got a friend with a car trailer ?

Both fronts though ?

I would never do is drive with bald(ing) tyres, it is a deffo tug, and the insurance company will be the first to walk away if you have a knock.

i am still a bit confused over the trade policy thing! the car is goiung to show up as unisured as its under a trade policy not an individual one?? bit coinfusing tbh! if the car was reg'd in the trade holders name then why bother with a trade policy! after all its the whole point of it if your going to be using different cars etc!
may be worth looking into to make sure the police were right in doing what they did, you never know!

trade ploicy in your name as the main trader does cover stuff you own, but you should list it with the data base if that is the case, or if you keep a car for more than a week or so.
But if you are a named driver under someone elses business trade cover thats fine so long as the car is theirs, a customers, or insured elsewhere, in this case presumeably its his personal transport, but not being used for the purpose of his employers / mates etc business.

I used to be on my Dad's trade policy whilst I was at uni, and to drive any of the family cars the cars had to be listed on the policy. I assume this then gets them listed on the central insurance database thingy.
