Low mileage newbie............

Post by colc »

Always been a fan of BX's, had a few as bangers over the years, so when I heard about "an old BX with low mileage", I was intrigued, especially as it was literally round the corner from me. The owner had bought the car, but his wife, didn't like it because she found it "too fast", and it's sat for about 18 months.. Anyway, he whipped up the garage door, to reveal a very dusty BX 16 valver, with 31k miles on it ! It's in unbelievable condition, only blemish is a tiny bit of rust on the inside of the sunroof frame. It's got a full service history, and everything works. Anyway, of course I bought it, and will be shortly giving it a full service.
It's amazing what still turns up over here, hidden away in garages........

31k  That must be one of the lowest left by now I would think.
Has it been in Jersey all of its life? with that milage I'd not be suprised, Jersey is only about 9x5 miles if I rememeber right!

Was originally registered in Geurnsey, came here in '91. The only mechanical fault I can find is a bit of a clonk from the front suspension over bumps. I haven't investigated, but if it were a car with "normal" suspension, I would diagnose it as drop link wear. or possibly anti roll bar bushes. I know very little about BX suspension, other than it's not as unreliable as the man on street thinks it is, so any suggestions what to look for/test would be welcomed......pics posted soon.

will be the same fella! drop links, there about £17.50 each through GSF/ECP, occasionally pop up on ebay but are normally the same if not higher price!!

top tip for doing them is Whack the car in high, chock it but with the weight on the wheels and undo the nuts that hold the drop link on, 16mm from memory, (spark plug socket is ideal for the thread length) as otherwise chances are get your socket on and it'll just spin the thread!

suspension wise, just check that it operates smoothly, may benefit from a flush and new fluid depending when it was last changed, the odd bit of 'citrobotics' can help ease a system up (up, down middle, up down middle etc on the height adjuster when engine running)
check all the pipes are okay and start tp gather some spares if you find them, octopus, return pipes etc.
as youve been by the sea might also be worth checking the condition of the fuel lines under the car, mine ('90 Phase 2) has lived in cornwall all its life (barring a short stint in plymouth!) and close to the sea and they rusted through quite nicely! cheap to replace and used to be easy to get through citroen dealers as the Xantia shared them iirc??

Thanks for that, I'll have a look tonight. While I'm thinking about suspension, anyone got an unwanted BX towbar they want to sell?
