im not 100% sure yet but im toying with the idea of selling the escort rs turbo mid next year as its had nearly a full rebuild and is running a good spec now. The market value for mine in its current condition/spec is £4k, that would give me, combined with 12 months saving enought to completely restore/re-paint the car and modify with a stage 3 big valve cammed head, emerald management and throttle bodies, pretty much the ultimate 16v?. I coud then buy another decent orion mk2 1.6i ghia ( second favourite car ) for everyday use as its cheap to insure and very good on fuel. Just an idea but got to think this through :?

Why an onion? what you don't spend on rust you can spend on fuel in the real car!!

In fairmness I've had two onions and drive a mates fairly regularly and I do quite like there direct simplicity, just a shame that most are ratty around the edges as theyre comfy and indeed rather good on juice.

Ironically the best mod for fuel consumption we found was to use a 55 van box as the lower closer ratios let the engine work better! even found top speed and motorway MPG better in 4th on my old 1.4!

I love mk2 orions ( onions! ) because they are cheap to buy, run and fix. Ive had 4 mk2 1.6i ghias in the past and all have been exceptionaly reliable and good on fuel. I like the simplicty of the cvh engine and also the mechanical fuel injection setup ( bosch k jetronic ) All parts for these cars a readily avaliable and dirt cheap and i can also do a lot of work ie change a cambelt on these myself as they are so simple. I like the 1.6i ghia/1600e models as they have xr3i performance ( same engine ) with 4 doors, bigger boot, better spec and a much cheaper insurance premium (£195 fully comp)compared to the rediculus xr3i and rs turbo premiums. Rust isnt realy that much of an issue if you know what your looking for and the places they rust :D. I always go for ones with a german shell and without bodykits hiding the arches and sills. If you keep the car clean and wash all the vunrable parts such as the underside of the sills and keep the arches clean under the lip they very seldom rust. My rs is in great condition for 21 years old because its looked after. Once ive had the bx restored it will not be used as an everyday car so the onion is the best bet.

The last one i had. Sold it for two reasons, 1- had to many cars and, 2- it was an early efi model and wouldnt run properly. Never did find out what was up with it and i changed every sensor fitted to no avail :(
