It soon adds up!
It soon adds up!
Just got the bill for an MoT (one new tyre and attention to rear light earths required) and handbrake cable (both sides) replacement.
£230!
The thing is, as you go through the invoice you realise that everything is reasonably priced. Just that when it's all totted up, it's a lot more than you thought.
I wish I had my own garage/workshop.. hey ho, one day.

You can't do these things yourself? Don't know exactly what the requiremends for mot are, you have to do these repairs by a garage?RobC wrote:Just got the bill for an MoT (one new tyre and attention to rear light earths required) and handbrake cable (both sides) replacement.

If it was in Holland:
-second hand tyre.....20 euro
-rear lights earth.....0 euro, can be done with some WD40 and cleaning the connectors and earth cable
-handbrake cable, don't know what it costs (can't be much) and replacing them can't be hard to do.....
No need for a garage or workshop, you just have to be a bit handy
MOT
Good that she passed without too many hassles Rob
The bill is fair IMHO for a garage if that includes the cost of th eMOT of course?
Suprising how these little bits add up though.
Cheers
Luke

yeah it does add up quickly! especially if you have high labour rates!!
mot fee is just plain silly now! £44.10 i think it is (either that or £44.15) but one thing is that you know they can charge you no more than the fee set out by the dvla for it but still its a bit steep and soon boosts the total bill!!!
intersestingly, mine had the rear light earth issue this year too! althoguh my tester whipped over to get a socket and rench and some emery paper whilst i whipped the light out to sort it!!!

The rear light earths are a pretty common problem on bx's and it seems all things PSA.
Be warned, the mot is set to rise to over £50 next year due to "the additional testing time required under the new regulations" (from a memo from DVLA).
Apparentley the mot now takes an average of 8.3 minutes longer than it did before computerisation so they are upping the price, b*s*ards!
The cost of a class 5 ticket for my coach is now £74.80.
Cheers

mine was £40 free retest if under 3 items failed on or £20 if failed on more than 3! which is pretty fair i think considering they are allowed by law to charge you a full fee for the retest as its not classed as a retest anymore! shocker!
fortunately though mione was straight through witht he minor scraping of an earth spot!

Mine charge £32 for the test and let me go away and do the silly stuff without a retest, and charge 15 if they have to book it back onto the computor, they also let me blag borderline stuff if they know its one I service regularly and keep an eye on...
labour rates vary enourmously, if theyre charging full rate you expect them to work to book times or at least efficiently.
I just charge by the hour - £25 upto a max of 120 per day so if youve got lots wrong its good value

hey lads,
i just put my flatmates primera in for its mot and it failed on 10 stupid thing really.
f/r wiper blade
f/l wiper blade
1 tyre
brake load sensing valve seized
number plate light
left side centre brake pipe (looked fine to me)
right side centre brake pipe (looked fine to me too)
c.v boot
front left brake hose
front right brake hose
they quoted 339 to repair it so i said it'll be back in a week 44.50 for mot with no retest or charge if i paid them to fix it. but no i washed the windscreen with fairy liquid, went to scrappers and got tyre 10, load sensing valve 3, number plate light free, c.v boot 1 quid front hoses 3 each. i then bought some copper piping 25ft for 7.49 + 21.99 for pipe flaring kit.
they quoted 339 i paid 50.49 + 6 quid for brake fluid so saved about 250 quid.

It's been a while since I had to get an MOT, but £50 is a hefty amount alright.
The NCT here in Ireland is €49 (£30), takes 20 minutes to do and can be valid for up to two years. It's got rid of the worst of the rustbuckets from the roads, but there are still plenty of sheds going around. A lot can deteriorate in the two years between testing I suppose...
