I've talked to many people about it (mostly in rally circles) and have been in my friends 1.9 with 1.6 box (well 1.6 with 1.9 engine really) and it feels pretty quick compared to the normal 1.9 I've played in. Horses for courses I guess. One day I'll get round to buying one and will be able to try both out for myself :)

Without checking I think the 1.6 has something like a 4.1 FD whilst the 1.9 is about 3.9 so the car will pull better but the gear spacing on the 1.6 is much better suited to a more revvy engine than the 1.9 but as you say horses for courses.
