Started off in a 1.3 (!) C reg bugandy Mk III Ford Escort Estate...... It met its demise 2 month after I passed my test. I "lent" it against a tree.

My Dad and I took the engine out of it and put it in a silver (mk III) Ford Escort Estate. This one survived long enough for me to put some XR2 pepperpots on it.  I stuffed it into the back of a lorry.

Had a break from cars for a few months the bough a K reg 2.0 Mondeo off my Dad. Had it 18 months. It needed a head gasket, core plugs, a front suspesion rebuild after I hit a kerb, and god knows what else. All because I was 19 and drove it everywhere like I had stolen it.

Moved on to a Vectra 2.5 GSI. 21 years old and I bought one of them. It cost a fortune to insure, drank more fuel than a tank but it sounded ace and never let me down. After 18 months I was nearly bankrupt (fuel and insurance costs) sold it to my best mate for a song. :(

I ended up buying a J reg Citroen ZX Volcane for 500 squid. No MOT, needed a head rebuild and various other odds and sods. It was black, I put 1.9 205 GTi wheels on it and debadged it. It didn't look to bad.

Got it through an MOT after about 2 months of work, and it was spectacularly unreliable. Two head rebuilds, heater matrix, clutch, drive shafts, brakes, exhuast, radiator, plug leads, ignition module, crank sensor, battery, alternator, starter motor, ignition barrel, starter motor again, corroded earths, clutch cable, throttle cable, bonnet release, the list goes on and on.

The best one was one morning, a neighbour complained to my Mum that my car was in the way and they couldn't get out of their drive. Mum comes up to my room in a panic (as all flapping women do) and grabs my keys. I'm lying in bed when I hear an almighty bang, I did wonder what it was but didn't think anything more of it. 5 min later my Mum comes up and says "I've blown your car up......"

Faulty fuel pressure regulator on the injection rail had leaked fuel into the plastic inlet manifold with predictable results.......

It got broken into twice, driven into three times, but it was really good to drive. I had it sideways everywhere......

Next was the 155. My first Alfa.

Image

I really liked that car. It died when someone pulled out in front of me in a rolls. I took to a grass verge, nearside rear wheel hit 200mm high wall in the verge and tore out the rear suspesion. I've still got most of the car in my lock up - bought it back and broke it for bits.

I put the engine in this:

Got rid of that and bought a 156 V6, Feb 05:

Image

Image

It made a luverly noise, but OMG, it was worse than the vectra on fuel. Most reliable car I've had.

I decided to go all sensible after the V6 and bought a remapped JTD - supposedly 200bhp and 300lb/ft:

Image

Image

Image

It wasn't the best purchase I've made. The airflow meter was fubar, hence the black rear end, the clutch slipped - dual mass flywheel = tres expensive, I put a new rad in it, the turbo was kaput:

Image

and the driveshafts were knocking. None of this was apparent on the test drive. Fortunately befor I had time to do anything with it, this happened:

Image

Image

A pillar was bent. Write off. I bought it back for 200 and flogged it on ebay as a recorded write off.

They gave me this to smoke around in whilst the claim was sorted out:

(taken at Leeds festival, '06)

Image

Which was nice.

We had a spare 156 at the time, so I put the money from the JTD into my project and drove this up untill last week:

Image

Its got a silly gearbox on it but its for sale if you know anyone who'd be interested. Be warned though, whilst the engine is superb, it has a appetite for engine oil.

And now I've got the BX. Pics to follow.      :P

Chriss, i love your passion for Alfa's!! i still love the 156, but hadbeen warned by the owner of the local fiat alfa garage to avoid the selespeeds as therer like most things on alfa's, fine when working properly but Very expensive when there not!!

Anyways! my previous motor history is very Short!
no pics of the first 2 on the comp, but they were
1979 T plate Mini 1000, had for 14 months before the engine died! then had brothers old car!
1977 S plate mini 1000, this one we had an 1100 motor put in and i put a stg.3 head on with a david vizzard 1 1/2 carb and lacb with RC40 single box exhaust! was a cracking car! had it for just on a year of pure unadulterated Caning before it popped a core plug and met its demise! (it had more filler than metal in the end!!!
The when Brother traded up again i took on his old car for the second time! this time though it was my beloved Pug!!
1989 F plate Pug. 309gti, i loved this car! lowered it 0mm at the front and a click att he rear, handled like a dream! had it 4 years and put 40k of pure betaing on it then the engien died one morningn in north devon on myway to work!
and then came the bx!

so not as adventurous i am afraid heheh!

Mine's quite varied I think (for the wee lad I am anyway):
1. 1986 Renault 5 GTL - inherited off my mum when I was 17 - great little car that just kept going and going.
2. 1988 Peugeot 309 1.6 GL - wanted something a bit quicker/bigger so got this biege beast. First car I mod'd by putting an SR dash in it.
3. 1990 Peugeot 309 1.6 SRi (205 GTi engine) - picked it up cheap at an auction as I wanted something quicker again. Bad move, as I rolled it coming back from a pub one night
4. 1987 Citroen BX 19DTR - borrowed long term to replace the 309, pretty slow but nice and comfy and everything was electric!
5. 1990 Golf GTi - bought cheap at an auction to replace the 309, but insurance company didn't like it so it had to go.
6. 1990 Fiesta Ghia CVT - why the hell did I buy this?
7. 1992 Rover 214Si - great engine and nice comfy car. Written off when a Vectra rolled out of a driveway and hit me as I was driving past - made loads of money out of the insurance claim though!
8. 1991 Rover 214GSi - liked the previous one so much I bought another, but in the top of the range trim level.
9. 1991 Peugeot 205 Dturbo - 3dr GTi lookalike, but with a TD engine. Could surprise a lot of people and I used it lots for road rallies at uni. EVentually written off on an event when we got intimate with a tree
10. 1990 Puegeot 205 XS - fantastic car with a revvy little engine. Needed fixing every week though. Must have used it on 30+ events though so it got lots of abuse
11. 1987 Volvo 340 DL - put a hole in the XS's gearbox on an event so sold it to a mate and bought the Ovlov cheap for some RWD action over the winter.
12. 1991 Peugeot 205 Dturbo - needed somethig economical for commuting so the Volvo had to go and was replaced with a 5 dr Dturbo.
11. 1989 Volvo 360 GLT - got bored of the 205 and wanted some more RWD so gave the 205 to my girlfriend and bought the 'high' powered 360. Loved this car and did a few rallies but it didn't cope with the abuse so sold it on when I couldnt be bothered to fix it and wanted something quicker.
12. 1985 Toyota MR2 mk1a - Replaced the Volvo with this, which was one of my best car purchases. Went like stink for a 20 year old car and the handling was amazing. Huge dent put down the side by a bint in a car park though, and was written off. Still drove it for months like it, but eventually got tired of it looking a mess and sold it to a mate.
13. 1987 Ford XR4x4 2.8i - bought this as a 2nd car when the insurance paid out for the MR2. Sounded amazing, but was pretty slow and drank fuel. Wet roads were massives of fun though!! Did a grass autotest in it and it caned everything there, inlcuding doing amazing dohnuts!
14. 1991 Citroen ZX Volcane 1.9i - nice car, but engine was knackered. Sold to a mate after a few months.
15. 1989 Volvo 360 GLT - sold the XR and bought this. Still got it now and am gradually turning it into a bit of a beast.
16. 1990 Suzuki Swift GTi - replaced the ZX with this, which was a great move. Fantastic car, looked great, amazing engine and still did 40mpg.
17. 1990 Volvo 480 Turbo - acquired for free from a garage, originaly to steal parts for the 360. Turned out to be a good'un so did a bit of work and sold it on for £350.
18. 1986 Opel Manta GTE - fancied some more RWD goodness so got rid of the Swift and replaced it with the Manta. Very, very cool car, but ultimately a bit slow.
19. 1990 Citroen BX 16v - my current 16v that's locked up in my garage awaiting some work.
20. 1991 Citroen BX 16v - bought with Kitch, and sold to Chris155.

Pics of most of them via the link in my sig :)

Christ, you seem to attract accidents  The black valver is definately doomed

I'll use nigh on a whole page with mine, so I'll keep it short

Started off with a BX when I was 16v. It was a 14RE in Ivory  I fitted a GTi 8v interior, 205 GTi pepperpots and an AX GT carb/inlet manifold.
I passed my test and drove it around for 3 months before blowing the diff planet gears. I replaced the BX with a ZX 1.4, which I soon realised was a mistake, simply for the fact it was one of the most dull cars I've ever driven. I quickly sold it and bought my first AX GT, in black. I still had the BX at this point and had repaired the gearbox. I then gave it to a mate who ran it around for a good year or so before it finally died.

Eventually the AX ran out of MOT. I took it off the road to build a project AX with a Saxo VTS engine. In the meantime I bought a 2nd gen Prelude to run around in:

Image

I loved that car. It was rotten as a pear, but went quite well. Chewed fuel in silly amounts though, but that view down the square bonnet with the lamps popped up made up for it. I sold it on for a huge loss a few months later, knowing just how rotten it was!

The project AX went to sh*t, and I had it scrapped. I bought another AX GT, this time a grey one and blew it up within a week. I sold it on for a few quid because I really couldn't be arsed with it. I decided the best thing to do was to buy a brand new car (one of the biggest regrets of my life!) and purchased a Saxo, which I obliged to modify. I was aware so many chavs had already butchered them, so I set out to do it successfully:

Image
There was ALOT of DIY smoothing involved on that one!

Eventually I grew bored of the paxo and joined up to the old 16v forum in search of advice and potentially a new car. Within weeks I'd sold the Saxo and was set to buy a red 16v from a guy in Kent, which I eventually did  Still have it now....approaching 3 years which is a record for me!

Since that I've had a BX 1.9D estate, with over 200k on the clock. The car never missed a beat. Image

I've also had a couple more 16v's, plus a mk1 16TRS and a mk1 19GT which my dad now has. I've had a Xantia Activa, which was a fantastic machine, except for the economy. I've also had some Xantia TD's (still have one now, which is proving to be a decent tool).

I had a Ford Ka.......thats all I'm saying about that.

I also had an AX GTi, which was pretty cool. Far better car than the GT and faster in every way, but not as fun. I then had a ZX 16v, which was a fantastic handling car. The only real let down for me was the engine which I really though was cack....I can see why they specced the GTi-6 lump later on!

Not as cack as this though:

Image

Nissan Primera 2.0e GT. 150bhp (apparently). Driving it was like driving a car where about 12 different teams designed different aspects of the car, yet never actually met at any point in the design. The gear ratios were awful, the power delivery was absent, the brakes were soft, the ride was awful and the whole thing was horrible to be in. Not too good really

More recently I had a Rover 216 Coupe. I liked the car, I liked the drive. The mechanicals were a joke sadly, a half-arsed attempt at a cooling system is what really let it down. You could just tell it was made on a budget!

Image

Theres a few more, but I've lost motivation now

'Started' with a Vauxhall Chevette 1.3 GLS. Brought for £50 in the free ads paper and came with 3.5 pistons and front wings made of rust. Replaced the broken piston with one that nearly fitted, sold it before I passed my driving test!
My first real car was 1979 Vauxhall Viva estate 1.3SL in bronze. Added some rostyle wheels from the local breakers and a fourth hand furry seat cover to stop the vinyl fusing into my back after it had been stood in the sun. Followed 6 months later by an '84 Cavalier 1.6GLS saloon in two tone blue and anthracite. Great car - blew the engine after 2 years, briefly had another 1.6 GL for an engine swap then sold to a mate who drove for another year or two then emigrated to Ireland where apparently they dont have MOTs....
Replaced with an '89 Sierra 2.0 GLS with optional ABS and Power steering. Another car I loved to bits - added K&N panel filter, tar-ox 12 groove discs and Toyo tyres. I used to handbrake turn into the bottom of my road. Sold to an old couple who liked the tint job I did on the windows! Then came the first of my BX 16vs, an H plate in black. She developed a few niggles like the starter motor not engaging when hot and a bad fuel injection relay, before dying heroically in the process of ridding the roads of a Fiesta Popular that pulled out in front of me - then swerved into my path as I evaded.
I was impressed enough at the resulting damage to the Fnord that I brought another 16v, an 89 G in black - before the week was out. I had some funny looks when I returned to work after a weeks sick leave in what appeared to be the same car :D
She passed away with a leaky octopus and a whining 3rd/4th gear. I ran a Sierra 1.8 TD estate for a while before the camshaft snapped, and an 86 Sierra XR4x4 with Janspeed exhaust, lowered springs and genuine Cosworth bonnet and grille which sounded nice, never went as well as I hoped. Replaced the TD with a 94 Cavalier 1.7td - went well enough to convert me to diesel, but ate two alternators in as many months (£250 each) and fried the wiring loom under the dash. After spending XMas week in my garage with a soldering iron I got fed up with bangers, so I raided the savings & brought a 2001 Seat Leon TDi which is still my daily driver, and ironically is responsible for the oil patch on my driveway - the green hornet hasnt leaked a drop since the dosuer valve was replaced.
The XR4x4 was replaced with, the green hornet, my 3rd BX16v in Bora-Bora green. She's currently off road as I've yet to replace the collection of baked bean tins that make up much of the exhaust :)

Edit : I came very close to replacing the green hornet with an Alfa 156 2.5v6 a couple of years ago. Then I realised I already owned a car that went fast, handled well, broke down regularly and had bugger all resale value, so I got the doseur fixed on the hornet instead and kept her :D

Interesting diversity in cars you've got !
Here's mine addition to the list :

1963 Bedford Camping van, my first car, was fourteen years :D
1965 Fiat 1500L
1965 Fiat 1500S
1967 NSU 100TTS ( silly how I sold it, only 709 were made)
1967 Plymouth Valiant 273" V8
1965 Ford Country Squire 352" V8. Wanna buy it back!
1963 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Holiday Coupe, had lots of compression, heads and cam in the '69 455" V8. Quite enthusiastic accellerating I over-revved the long-stroke big-block too many times and spun a rod bearing. Car still exists.
1971 Opel Record Caravan.
1972 Volvo 144.
1974 Volvo 144, had this more than ten years, eventually with a proffessionally built head and a 12:1 calculated CR, good torque, revved strong to 7 grand and fairly good mileage too!
1976 VW Golf LS, reliable and fun to drive.
1989 Toyota Model F, had more than 400.000 km when I decided to sell it
1986 Toyota Model F, this took us three years in a row to North Cape and back through Norway, Sweden and Finland, 2400 km one way, not an incident! Still in my backyard.
1986 Peugeot 309 GT, agile and reliable, sold a couple of months ago.
1988 BX16V, spent a small fortune in parts! Two years ago it took us to Croatia, we met Ziga in Slovenia, one mishap on the 7000 km trip : Corroded terminals at the fuelpump.
1991 BX GTI, acquired as a donor car, but you know how it is....was too good to dismantle, spent some weekends on it and some parts and now my dear old mother uses it as her daily transportation.
BX16V '88, BXGTI '90. And '00 Xantia HDI.
