Good observation there Doc.
Jezzie is right, Turbo D cog set.
Jonsgot, the car is much quieter in top gear, and fuel economy is better.
Yes, there is a bit less pick up in 5th, but I use 4th to accelerate anyway.
Top speed is almost certainly a bit higher, but I have not had the chance to find out yet.
Overall in France we got 38.4 mpg, not bad as we went up the mountains as fast as we could.
It is a worthwhile modification if you use the car for long trips. A 6th gear would be better, but more work and expense.
Incidently, the only fault the car had on the trip was a faulty brake light switch which I fixed by the side of the road.

Ahhh, well, that explains it then!
I thought for a minute maybe it had the 6 speed box..
I have been toying with the idea of sticking a TD cog set in mine for years, never bothered in the end though, I can get 42MPG on a run if careful with the loud pedal, and I'm usually alone in the car and have the stereo up loud so the noise never bothers me!
I agree Simran, thats a cracking looking road!
Wish I'd gone now...

I averaged 33 mpg consistently over a period of many months, I could have done better I guess but ... it's was a 16 valve. Now I average 42 to 45 out of the Xantia 2.1 TD over all travel. Got 36 mpg towing the C2 back from Doncaster on a large tandem trailer, and I passed things (bad me !)
... and there are unknown unknowns

Thats a steady 60 mph, so whilst most things are hoofing past, if I'm in no hurry to get wherever I'm going, it's no hardship..

Oi Luke, get off yer arse and get yer valver sorted!
That do??
Actually I slightly broke mine a couple of weekends back, so it's sat in the shed awaiting a bit of a strip down...
I'll no doubt having back on the road in a couple of weeks though, purely since it's the cleaner car to use when ferrying family / Kate about in..

I dragged mine out of the garage last weekend to wash all the dust off it!. The airflow meter seems to have gone funny ( was told it was on its way out at the last mot as it wouldnt adjust for the emissions ) when i start it from cold it runs rich- realy rich for a minute or so .
Going to start getting all the bits in for it after the new year so ill be puting up a new resto thread and updating it as i go along.

Mines still looking dreadfull, think it got polished last yaer and I've prob washed it ywice this year?, maybe? But still in use! seem to be getting 35 mpg with a mix of 65-70 cruise as well as enjoying myself around town so 'm happy with that!, had a run out this afternoon and I seem to have collected some electrical gremlins again, so i really should have a good go at cleaning all the engine control connections, just rather too busy o lavish any real attention on the old knacker
