Ollie,

You usually only have to alter the angle by 10 - 15 degrees to prevent them bottoming out on the collar of the ball. Failing engine mounts can also irritate the problem. None of ours have had bent rods; they just seemed to start doing it right out of the blue, possibly through the engine mount softening up or climate extremes.
