Car has been a little noisy of late and i put this down to a rattley exhaust and the fact that the exhuast is soooo loud i can hear nothing else over it  but on the way home from work today things got a little more serious.
Had been driving at a steady 60-70 mph into a 30 zone slowed down to be greeted by the sound of a diesel engine under the bonnet and lower oil pressure than normal. Anyway got her to my mechanics very gingerly and yup you guessed it.......... goosed big end bearings.
Not sure if my new chip and the fact i have been revving her pretty high lately has anything to do with it but i bet it has not helped  .

Anyways car is at the doctors and will stay there till she has been repaired barring any shocks on proper inspection.

What with the Capri being written off and now this its been a bad month for cars.....still i got my new Bx1.6 TRS to run round in for now

Think yourself lucky. I've got to drive around in a lilac Hyundai Accent whilst I change the gearbox! (and a few other bits......). Shame about the bearings though, it always seems to happen when the car's running nice :(

Just need to get some weed killer for the bumpers :P , but for £120 with tax and test its cheaper the the bus and it'll do for Sarah as a runabout for a while after mine is sorted.

I wouldn't have though the chip caused it. I heard a std XU9J4 bottom end was good for 8ks revs.

These cars suffer from oil starvation so badly, I reckon its more along those lines.

I have heard it said that apart from baffling the sump, another handy mod for these is the oil pump from a series 2 (2 litre) Mi16 as it runs a higher capacity.
As your cars and ours can have different specs at times, it may pay to ask some questions and look at this mod if the car is running a bit over the original settings on the rev limiter.

PS. Those old Trs were a comfy old thing and performed OK providing you ran preemium in them and kept all the crap from disintegrating fuel lines and tank out of the carby.

Steve,
 was sorta joking about selling chip, but if you want one:

If you contact him you will get it a bit cheaper :D

hi there,
the chip on ebay looks like a bargain. though i wouldn't fancy revving it to near 8k. i think if these cars were newer then they could probally take it but i dont trsust them in old engines with lots of miles on the clock.

cheers rossco

I would not rev mine to the new limiter, most mine went up to was 7.5k, its not just about the increased amout of revs but it did improve the mid range power so worth it IMO, oh and mine only got 98k on the clock so plenty of life left yet i hope.

Picked the valver up this afternoon all sorted.

My mechanic showed me the old shells and they were quite worn but two out of the four wern't as bad so i was lucky really to get away without having to have the crankshaft re ground 8) . The rest of the bottom end looked in very good condition too so thats nice to know, should be able to put up with plenty more of my abuse now :P .

Something i have noticed over the last few weeks is that how different 2 bx16v's can be. Mine has a heavy clutch and a light gas peddle where as the new J plate 16v is the other way round, mine feels like it has no suspension compared to the J plate but obviously it does I dunno maybe i am more used to mine and more attached to it .

Anyway i shall give the Beast an easy life for a while change the oil and filter the normal service will resume  .
