To get the starter to crank the engine really fast, like it should:
Check you have no devices draining current when the ignition is off, such as the radio.
assuming the starter is OK, check the cable connections between battery, starter and chassis are clean and tight.
Then wire a relay so the relay powers the solonoid direct from the battery. Use the existing wire to power the relay when the key is turned.
(like on the headlamps, the wiring is too long and thin)
Fit a 5A fuse by the battery for the new wire.
I fitted a new starter and did the above, now the engine "nearly jumps out from under the bonnet" when I turn the key. (old quote from Alan S)

tis defo worth fitting a relay to the circuit! helps starting no end!
folling alan s's suggestions i have fitted a starter button to mine and wired it such that the key or the button will start the car, with a direct feed fromt he battery to the relay and to the starter and with the zxtd starter mine fires up silly quick now! defo worth doing! (the relay that is! although the starter button just looks cool!)
