Having seen this on the web recently i'm intrigued to know how well our cars hold up in real accidents Anyone else got any BX wrecks to share? (hopefully NOT from personal experience)
Anti-burst catches held up well in that one... NOT! Starting to get that tin-can feeling Mind-you, looks like the rear wheel position helps slow the crumple a bit...

Like any other 80's design, they're basically crap compared to anything modern. It's not so much of an issue if you hit something else of a similar period, but what finishes you off is once the passenger cell has failed (as that one has) at which point it's about as rigid as a half crushed coke can.
Worst/most cynical design car of the period was the Sierra. The longitudinals end at the firewall, which is fine if you hit a concrete block as per crash tests of the period, but useless if you hit another car.
If you're driving a BX though, take heart! The risk of actually being involved in an accident in the first place are statistically much lower than other models of the period.

I'd agree! Seeing as the rear wheels are pinned in the up position i'd say it's fair to assume the car was parked when it was hit from behind... bet he wasn't happytim leech wrote:Judging by the wheels and non genuine sideskirst it looked like it was a cared for motor.

I had a prang in my phase 1 when I was young and reckless it was not pretty.
I rounded a bend at about 55/60 mph and was presented with a Calibra stood still indicating to turn right - bad news was that she was stood because of traffic oncoming and to the left of her was a grass verge,nice, but the council had posted a massive twin tube signpost so all I could do was stamp on the brakes and try and squeeeze through result was a hefty smack between my drivers side front anf her rear passenger side.
My brother rounded the bend just in time to see the Bx with the front end in mid flight!
Damage to Calibra was not bad in that she drove off quite happily with smashe dbumper and badly creased rear and sid epanels however -
BX had to be recovered and the car was crumpled all the way upto the drivers door, we had a power ram and needed to push the screen pillar back forward into position then fitted -
Complete front chassis leg
All front parts i.e.bumper cross member rad and housing etc pair of wings, bonnet, had to uncrease the scuttle and repair the trim that sits along the bottom of the windscreen.
It was a major rebuild and I even had to repair the fuel tank which split during th eimpact
I was fine but the car was soft to say the keast

IIRC the DVLA says the car ha snot been taxed since 2002 or similar.

Hooly cow Luke, thats an impressive side impact to split the fuel tank! I've given them some serious beetings before (usually leaving something big and metal unde the car and forgetting it sinks) and have thus far never done any damage. I guess this was when BX's were reasonably new and worth fixing? Seems an awefull lot of work to contemplate on a BX these days (though Doc has proven anything is possible!)

I think you know the reg of this car Vanny but I will not post it up as the car was sold on several times via the dealer I traded it in at I beleive.
The impact was almost totally frontal bur centred on the drivers front and it was that sid eof th etank at the bottom that it split - perhaps in the impact when everything shortens momenterialy the rear beam mounts crushe dthetank or maybe punctured it, it wasn't a massice hole but the tank got wet at this point in about 5 mins after it had been dried so I decided a repair patch was suitable.
Would be 1995/6 and my mate had a fully equiped workshop with a lift etc so we just whipped the lump out and hacked off th eleg and grafted on a new one, borrowed a flaring tool from the next door 2CV guy and bought a roll of kunifer and regretted selling at about 1 day after driving round in the 205 - nice motor the 205 but just lacked the punch of th evalver th epowerband was boring for want of abetter word.
I think it is a case of "D6C once driven forever smitten"
