Hi All,
I took the handbrake surround out yesterday to renew the handbrake cables. not a problem there! but on re-fitting the surround i put the rear elctric switches back in the consul and tested them. When i use both left and right rear window switches up or down? the switch starts to smell of burning why is this???? All i did was take the consul out, disconnect the rear window switch wiring do the handbrake cable then refit the lot? I HATE french electrics

I would not bother removing the console just whip the switches out and pull some wire through as well then you can check the wires for any sign os damage and then test the circuit by operating the switches and check that it is actually the switch that is giving the smell, it may even just be that the switches are dirty and through lack of use are burnibg off nay crud that has built up.
Give them a shot of contact cleaner of WD-40 and give them a good work out with the power off before tryinmg them again.
Also worth cleaning the plug and switch contacts as well to rule out anycrud being burnt off.
So long as the windows appear to be working freely there really should be no need to worry.
Cheers
Luke

I havent ever checked the rear window switches, but if I recall correctly the central locking is positive earth or something daft - I had fun getting a Sparktronic alarm fitted to my second BX many years ago because the central locking worked back to front compared to sane cars.
Best bet is to check things out with a multimeter, twice, then stand by with a fire extinguisher and a handful of spare fuses!
