online car sales

Post by Adrian E »

Hi folks

Where do people have bookmarked for hunting out second hand cars?

Apart from fleabay, piston heads and Auto Trader I can't seem to find many places to look for a new car online

Any links greatly appreciated....

don't think I've ever had a positive result for a Bx search on Exchange & Mart, they're not the first place to look anymore, I think Autotrader has that slot now.

I'm after another Passat - have got bored with the current one and fancy a W8 estate  Has 2/3rds of a Bentley Continental GT engine so just the 4 litres.......

Thanks for the links guys - will check them out :D

There's a few on auto trader but not the spec I'm after.

Although a used Passat W8 may seem like a lot of car for the money, its worth keeping a realistic eye on running costs. The 4.0-litre 275bhp engine sups fuel at a fair old rate and youll need to be very disciplined to manage 20mpg. That said, it does feel a very sophisticated and modern car and should run and run.

I'm sure Jane will agree with you Adrian

Where'd you pull that one from Dan?! There's not much info out there on them in general, particularly in the UK. Less than 300 were sold here in 3 years with a mix of estates/saloons manuals/autos. There's about 4000 in the USA so a bit more knowledge there.

The current 1.8T is only getting 22-24mpg average so I'm hoping around town won't be significantly worse.

The engines are generally good for 150k miles before you need to open them up, and then it's only for a timing chain change as a precaution - costs about the same as what a cambelt did on the 1.8T as the front has to come off the car to do that!

I'm going to look into getting a 2 year warranty on one if I buy, for peace of mind. Most of the running gear is the same as a standard V6 Passat so shouldn't be too bad for parts. The interior is a parts bin special of Audi A8/Phaeton bits.

As far as VFM goes, these things were more or less £35k new in 2002 and I saw a tidy one (estate auto in R32 blue) sell for £8,400. It didn't have the DVD sat nav/TV or a few other toys I'd like (heated rear leather, memory option on drivers seat, auto fold mirrors etc)

The ones on auto trader now are largely over priced - I'm test driving one down in the west country over Xmas, but it needs to be £2k cheaper really.
