That begs the question, why does the 16V need such a powerful generator? Surely 55A is enough.
The compression ratio is a bit higher for starting than the 8V, but thats the only difference I can think of. Then a bigger battery would suffice.
Maybe it was a reliability thing, and they were a bit mean when equipping the cheaper 8V car.
Still, I am glad they fitted one on mine.

Prob cos the 8v Gti is based on the Tri, on the 8v carb, similar to base 1.6s etc etc so developmentally they stuck with the same as waht they had many years previously! whereas the 16v was developed as one bracket on one proper spec car later in life!
How does that sound for logic? I was impressed!

jezzie, the trickle charger youhave gort so8unds like my old one! brilliant little things! charge in most daylight even in rainy conditions!
i did by a slightly bigger beefier 5w version for mine though as it often sits outside for weeks not used when the wife's car is running okay!

I have one of the solar trickle charger panels very handy.
Also when I was searching foir a new alternator pulley I was told that the valver has 2 types of alternator, IIRC they are similar but different manufactureers.
