Been looking at my alternator collection, and the aircon 16V did have an 80amp alternator on it.

Not sure what is fitted on my car, but with my 400w full beam headlamps,
the 80amp may be a good idea, but not had any problems yet.

Jez,
pm sent.

It appears to me that many, possibly all, BX16Vs have 80A alternators, and the 8VGTIs have 55A devices.

This is based on my parts bin which includes the mortal remains of 3x16Vs and 2x8Vs. Only one of the 16Vs had air con.

I just got myself a solar trickle charge panel.Goes in the front or rear screen/parcel shelf, connects to the battery or fag lighter, trickels the battery while parked up,(daytime) Ideal if you only run short journeys this time of year.Only £20

Yep 16v all have the same 80A as the TDs which is where most of my spares come from, they're also quite cheap as recons and available off loads of old pugs as well. The 55A ones last less well and are indeed fitted to 8vs and so on.

That begs the question, why does the 16V need such a powerful generator? Surely 55A is enough.

The compression ratio is a bit higher for starting than the 8V, but thats the only difference I can think of. Then a bigger battery would suffice.

Maybe it was a reliability thing, and they were a bit mean when equipping the cheaper 8V car.

Still, I am glad they fitted one on mine.

Prob cos the 8v Gti is based on the Tri, on the 8v carb, similar to base 1.6s etc etc so developmentally they stuck with the same as waht they had many years previously! whereas the 16v was developed as one bracket on one proper spec car later in life!

How does that sound for logic? I was impressed!

I have one of the solar trickle charger panels very handy.

Also when I was searching foir a new alternator pulley I was told that the valver has 2 types of alternator, IIRC they are similar but different manufactureers.

Cheers
