195/55/15 tyres

Post by Kitch »

Anyone ever run a 16v with these :?: They look too big just sat next to it, but I thought I'd ask.

So did I once, and they were fine. Thats what the wheels I've just bought were advertised as, but as it turns out they're 195/55 and the sellers a complete t**t!
Looking at it, I think they're gonna be too big and I've just wasted a wad of cash.

It's all down to the offset.

A couple of years ago i bought a LHD Gti which came with nice rims & 205/50/15 tyres that only touched when the suspension was right down.

I'd say you're fine with the 55's as long as you arms are straight & true it shouldn't be an issue.
Now listen here you mullet...

they'll be fine, 195/55/15's are only 6mm taller than the standard 195/60/14's, so your speedo will just read 140 instead of 142

The speedo might actually be accurate for once then

The offset of the new wheels is pretty small....they've got big spacers to adapt them, so should be ok perhaps?

I'll trial run one on the front tomorrow....see if it rotates

you should be okay kitch! it works out that a 195/50 would give you a 97.5mm side wall and the 195/55 would give you 106.25mm side wall so your effectively looking at the difference between a brand new tyre and a on the legal limit as far as tread height etc! but it is odd how much visual difference the 55 makes though!

are the wheels ford wheels then if they are spaced down?? (spacing reduces the offset but am sure you knew that??) the only issue you may have is if they are close to the limit on offset either side due to the slightly larger sidwalls?? but wouldnt have thought it would rub! my 17's were on 205's on a 7" rim and didnt rub!

The alloys are Ford fitment yeeah, with a huge offset. So they have spacers to bring it down....I'm gonna try and make it even lower to widen the track as much as poss.

Easy on the front but remember the rear arches will restrict you greatly.

Best going for a stud/nut conversion as you've probably gathered the standard flat bolts are no good & the standard conicals are too short!

would be worth possibly using a dremel or the type to remove as much of the lip as you can on the rears as i think you can get about 5mm extra off it?? may be a bit more?? not really looked that deeply into it!
dont forget (sure you havent!) to get extra long bolts for the wider track!!

All ready waaaay ahead of ya on the bolt front :)

But yeah, trimming the rear arches will probably be a need.

I think I got about 5mm off the rear metal inner arches on the Green 16v when I fitted the 17" wheels, this flushes them with the plastic bodykit extension pieces.

Yup! close to 5mm can be gained by trimming back th emetal and som eof th eplastic lip - I did mine just as a precaution really.
