I'm still sticking up for the valver here....you can use the T word all you want with diesels, but they're geared for economy. They're also heavy with big wheels like most new cars and I think they're overrated. I blew away an Ibiza Cupra (the new diesel one) last year. Level in first, but as soon as I grabbed second I jumped ahead as his engine searched for its turbo.

to make the oil burners go fast, they have to put a turbo & intercooler on.

If you had a turbo on your petrol car, you would be much faster than them.

I have not yet found a diesel car I want to own. The best argument for them is still an economical one.

But why do folk spend £16k on a new car so they can save a few pounds a week on fuel?

My annual milage is low, so I will stick with petrol cars. If I needed to save money on fuel, I would go for an LPG conversion kit.

I did the stats when I was looking to buy a car for commuting, and even on a second hand purchase, I calculated that adding on the additional extra cost, the additional cost of fuel, offset against the extra economy, to make it worthwhile, I would have needed to cover 20,000 miles in that first year to make it worthwhile.

As it is I averaged 35mpg in the 1.8 petrol Nissan.

Nah I meant Torque. Everyone goes on about how quick diesels are etc, but at the end of the day if they were faster than petrols then all rally cars and race cars would be diesel.

Diesels are good for in gear shove, but their overall head to head performance with petrols isn't as good.

Diesels masy have lots of torque, but they all have an extremely narrow power band due to the fuel's very slow combustion. In effect this means that a disesel engine will never be happy above 4000 RPM. No matter how many valves they put in the head, it's still limited by the the laws of physics. That's why a diesel engine should never be used in anything except really large boats and maybe some trains :mrgreen:

Jan, diesel is also a good fuel for tanks and farm tractors.

When Ferrari only build diesel cars, I will reconsider.

iirc the past 2 winers of the leman have been deisel!
i still wouldnt buy one though! i dont do naything close to enough milage to make it beenficial!
they have come a long way since the na deisels but there is no replacement for a good high reving petrol engine! (or low reving V8!8))
