Opinions on alloys

Post by csg100 »

I'm not really sure why, but a couple of weeks ago I bought a cheap set of 205 alloys off ebay. My thinking behind it was that they'll fit either the BX or my girlfriends 205 if I decide I liked them. So I stood one next to the BX this afternoon to give me a rough idea of how they looked, and here it is:
Image

Pretty good I thought, so I attempted to do a quick photoshop, which came out pretty rubbish (couldnt get the back wheel right!) but gives you a slightly better idea of how it would look:

The only problem is that the wheels are only 5.5" inch so I'd probably have to stick with 185/60 R14 tyres.

So what do you reckon? Are these wheels worth refurbing and using on the BX? Or should I stick with my original plan of looking out for a set of 205 1.9GTi alloys?

them there alloys came on the 405's and a few of the 205stdt's!
not bad alloys but imo hold out for the speedlines! still worthy of a refurb as it gives you a set to 'practise' on!;)

Yeah they're the one's Timmo.

I was thinking they'll be good to practice on. Guess I can give them a go and see what they come out like. If I don't want them at the end of it they can just go back on the bay! And if I ruin them I've only lost a fiver ;)

I actually like those on the Bx, something different.

As they are from a similar age car, suit the styling of the Bx, don't look out of place.

if these were wider, id go for them over the speedlines, they look really good against the bx.

They don't do it for me, I have to be honest, but agreed, they are differentm, though the tyre restriction would put me off to start with.

Any pics with the centre caps in - that might make all the difference.

And yes, I have defo seen them on 405's, some of the late ones (GTX?) IIRC

Cheers

I think they look alright, but I prefer a more aggressive style myself.

And judging from the second pic, I'd say your rear-arm bearings need doing

Standard on the phase 1 405 GTX and optional initially on the phase 1 405 SRi.
ET24 or ET25 I think, whereas of course the speeline 205/309 GTI alloys are ET19.
I think they look ok though on the bx.

Good points from everyone really. I agree that they don't look as good as speedlines, but I do still like them. Haven't got any pics with the centre caps unfortunately - but they have a big Peugeot symbol on them anyway, so something would need to be done about that!

I'm not too fussed about tyres as they would need a full set of tyres anyway and a decent set of 185s wouldnt be that different compared to the one's I've got now in terms of grip.

Only problem is that on the rear hubs there's some sort of locating pin and there's no cutout on the back of the alloys for it to sit in. Do speedlines have this same problem?

I think they're minging for a 16V

You'll spend more tarting those up and knocking up some non-Pug centre caps than a half decent set of wheels will cost.

I'd stick 'em on the 205 and if all else fails get some 205 1.9 alloys for it - centre caps are much smaller

the location pin on the hub iirc is alspo the disc retaining bolt as such and isnt essential, so can easily be got around! no issues with it on the speedlines though! (either that or i dont have the locating pin lol!
the centre caps are an easy fix, light skim of filler and some sanding and bobs your uncle! they dont look that bad overall on the car and are definately something different but not a patch on the speedlines (pug 1.9 ones!)

I'd refurb them myself Adrian, so although it would take a lot of effort it wouldn't cost too much! And if I used them for the 205 they'll still need refurbing anyway.

Of course I could just be lazy and sell them on :) My first project is to restore the bumpers on the 16v though, so I'll see how that goes first before I start the wheels!

I'll still be keeping an eye out for some bargain speedlines though - if I find a cheap set local these ones will definately be ditched :)
