Hello Newbie -with few questions on BX stats

Post by tali »

Hello Newbie -with few questions.
My brother had a red BX16v G488DRE (last on road in 2001) .Loved the looks , speed and comfort.
Was wondering how many BX16v were sold new , how many remain? how many in Triton Green and Purple(Silver is pretty rare?) and how many with a/c and leather , any L -regs about - or the last one sold in UK?
Thanks
PS- i like my BX16v totally standard with no mods

Hi Tali

well the questions you ask are the sort of things only Citroen UK/FR could really answer, even the DVLA dont know the specs of cars on the road when considering leather AC etc. The cost of leather and AC where rather huge and so there are not that many 16v's with them fitted (and considering some of the other options on the road at the time, if you want a fully tricked out car then there are much better looking alternatives).

My estimation is that there are less than 150 valvers on the road in the UK at the moment, i think this site picks up maybe 30% of those on the road (when considering those who are registered with known cars but do not needs be post). I would like to think that there are as meany as 500 16v's in the UK in various conditions (i know of a number that are destined for scrap in the near future) but i can imagine the actual number is closer to 300 or less, it is a dieing breed!

It is my intention in the new year to get in touch with various agancies and see if i can find a definative number, but this is likely to take a long time to sort out.

Of the maybe 10 valvers i have seen with leather i think only three of them have had leather from the factory, with most valvers getting there leather from 8v donors during the 90's. The typical tell tale is that the leather interior has its own unique door cards which for some reason are not often carried over from the donor car (possibly because at a glance they look the same as the regural door cards). I have only ever seen one valver with genuine factory fit leather and aircon, and while i doubt i have seen the biggest number of valvers i have seen a fair few so i doubt it is a common occurance.

Colours, well my own view has changed over the years, i always thought that red and black where the most popular colours but i think perhaps red is one of the more rare colours its just there are now quite a few on the road and in the club! The two silver colours are rather popular, there are a lot within the club (both Ph1 and Ph2). I know where there are three black ones all parked together! My feeling is that the dark silver is the most abundant with white ones being the most rare (in the UK at any length), i would be interested to see other peoples feelings on this! There where NO 16v BX's made with the metalic purple paint in the UK, i think i have seen one which was a respray in early life. The purple metalic paint was a semi exclusive colour for the 4x4 and a few 8v GTi's, i think it is a lovely colour, but seemingly hard to maintain.

As for registrations, I have seen a BX estate on an M-plate and i think i once saw an estate on and N-plate but have never been sure. Basically these where made years earlier but did not get registered until later in life, the last year of manufacture was 1993 or a K-plate but by this time most of the production was of estates and parts bin specials. The last produced BX16v that was shipped to the UK and still exists i suspect belongs to a member on here!

I guess that partly answers some of your questions, it would be wondeful to have numbers and figures for all your questions though.

Thanks Vanny for detailed reply :D
I recall Autocar published some figures in their Top 50 Used cars- it was iirc about 1100 BX16v - although that was some 10 years ago.
As for the purple 16v i asked because What Car? magazine definitely had one (with leather aswell) for a 4 car group test in a company car supplement. It was either G or H reg.I actually had this magazine - but sadly got binned without my knowledge :(
It's odd to think that at the time my brother had his i could recall another 3 within a 1.5 mile radius (red, black and white)

That stuff on BXC is way out of date, I think thats 4 or more years old now, so nowhere near that many will be left.

hey tali, it may be of interest to you that the 16v's 0-60 time can be cut a fair bit by chipping them as supposedly they cant reach 60mph in 2nd gear at 7200 rpm. mine is chipped among other things and achievs 60 mph in second gear at 7800rpm in about 6.5 seconds.

Al least you have 100-200 left in UK , we only have one left here.
and I have a half cut as spares (from HK)
Even the 8V BX 19GTi are dwindling from the almost
1000 that were sold here.
Can barely see any on the road now, I get stares when I drive my valver.

BTW any one with a Superchip to spare for a Ph 1 1989 non-cat.

I've killed 3 valvers, but they were utter dogs.
Those three kept another 6 at least going though...
