Hey guys!

The standard exhaust on my 16 valve died from rust a few weeks ago. I took her to an exhaust shop which has done all my work in the past and got a new rear section made.

The problem is that a standard 16v rear muffler (entry and exit on same side, effectively a twin-loop design) wasn't available, so a normal muffler (exit and entry on opposite sides) was used. A resonator was placed in the exhaust just before the tailpipe too.

So- from the outside, it's great. A bit louder than normal, but not too bad. Inside the car, it's ridiculous. It booms really severely on deceleration, almost requiring the use of earmuffs at certain rpm's!!

I think ive managed to find a standard 16v rear muffler brand new, but it's also listed as fitting the bx 16 & bx 19.

So I guess my main question is whether the rear muffler setup on the 16v is the same as "normal" BX's?

Am pretty sure that the 16v box is for that model only, most places will try and sell youu a td one which will do the job,
the gebuine 16v back box had a chrome trim on the tail pipe, rare find now,
possibly worth if you an, get a system made in stainless from downpipe back as per original

I think you are talking about the "cross-box" i.e. the section of exhaust that runs across the width of the car just behind the spare wheel carrier?

If you are, then you have realised that this piece does the majority of the silencing on a 16V.

IIRC this part is common with the other 1.6 and 1.9 petrol engine cars. Could also cross over with a diesel exhaust but I don't have that information to hand.

A quick glance at my parts catalogue gives 95 634 351.

Whether or not this is still availalbe is another matter.

Thanks for the heads up. The cross box is the bit I'm after- the factory one is certainly a very effective silencer!

I've found a company over here that has a few original crossboxes in stock, I was just put off by the fact that it was also listed to fit the bx16 & bx19 but I suspect this is actually correct & the 16 valve used the same cross box.

I'll go and check it out!

Hi toby, let me know what company.
My 16 Valve also has an aftermarket exhaust on it and is a bit loud.
I'm in Brisbane.

The oval shaped cross box is the same as TD models, aswell as 1.9 injected models. 1.4, 1.6, 1.9 carb and 1.8/1.9 n/a diesel models use the smaller round type with sleeved joints. The hockey stick pipe going from the front pipe to it is just the same.

On a 16v, the downpipe is specific (though a GTi 8v one does fit....just sits a bit low) and the backbox on the ph2 was black with a black oval tailpipe (ph1 GTi 16v had the standard curly wurly GTi/TD setup). Aftermarket ph2 Walker ones had a chrome tailpipe.

Company is called proex, they're in Dandenong, Victoria but as a wholesaler, sell to exhaust shops nation-wide.

Give them a call and they'll let you know your nearest stockist.

Youre right, they were indeed without sunroof and had metal bonnets too.
