Noisy timing belt cover

Post by Arska »

When engine is cold, timing belt cover is very noisy. It sounds like a drum, when you knock it with fingers. Timing belt or camshaft sprocket rubs to cover and the sound is amplified by the cover. Rubbing stops after a while. Cover makes engine sound ugly. Should there be any dampening material somewhere or rubber between cover half's. How to fix it.

It's quite a common problem - only real cure is to replace the cover or try bending the current one to give you more clearance. It just warps with heat and age, assuming the belt is correctly tensioned

I opened the cover and checked both timing and tension. Timing was a little bit off, RH tensioner was too tight and LH a little bit loose. When I started the engine, the sound seems to be disappeared. Maybe it was caused by too loose belt.
Unfortunately I also tried to fix leaking cam cover, which was leaking to spark plug well. Now it is leaking to exhaust, damn. I also find broken steering rack rubber boot (renewed about a year ago) and broken security valve pressure switch. Never ending story...

Ah, the old 'i'll just quickly change this part' and 4 years later you will still be trying to fix things. I think this is what they call the 'joy' of ownership!
