Hi,

Firstly id like to say what a great site and thankyou to mike P for pointing me to it.

Hello to everyone.

They story so far.........

Yesterday i colloected the white 1990 phase 1 16v that i got from ebay.

After a 400 mile round trip to wales im really pleased with it because it got me home without problems

its completly original and although tatty its honest, its been in the same family for al its life and has only one owner on the log book. The chap i brought it from is 70 and has no idea about what it is and how rare they are becoming. He pretty much used it as a van with the rear seats down and full of tools which is why it needs a full clean. The paint is as flat as you can get and currently looks and feels like tip-ex but fingers crossed a day with my mop and g3 will bring it back up

Its got a full mot so i can start using it asap but the plan is to save it and bring it up to former glory, but............ I really really need your help.

I will put a wanted ad for all the bits it needs but to get the ball rolling it needs front and back bumpers and a passenger elec mirror, so if anyone is breaking one please help me save one.

Right sorry for the essay, just wanted to introduce myself.

Ps, if anyone could let me into the main area that would be a massive help.

Cheers

Adie

Hi Adie, I have a passenger mirror you can have for nothing (well, cost of postage) because it only adjusts left and right, the up and down motor must have broken. You can adjust it up and down manually though, and you usually only need left/right adjustment from inside the car. Dunno if it's any good to you but let me know.

Thanks for the warm welcome,

yes its the £250 one from ebay.

This morning ive had the first chance to get a good look at the car and get it in the air.

After looking in the garage section of this site and seeing how much people got their lovely ph 2's for I feel i may have got a bit of a pear?

What do you lot think?

Its leaking fluid from the rear suspension and the front is taking time to rise

Its leaking fluid from the suspension pump at the front of the engine

it didnt look rusty when i got it but i have found that it has been welded at the back where the exhaust hangs, rust on the bottom of all doors and rust on the front windscreen pilar!

I really need this car to be a reliable run around to replace my rover 418d.

I know its hard to say but how reliable are these cars?

Sorry for the million questions, but im feeling a little disapointed and feel i may have bitten off more than i can chew

Anyones thoughts would be great

Thanks everyone

Hi mate,

I feel the same when looking at the nice cars in the members' area! But don't get too downhearted.

Touch wood here - I've had my 1989 (er, I found out it is '89 after all) phase 1 16v for a year and it has been surprisingly reliable so far. It demands attention to keep it running well, but basically it is rather good.

Although some people (robin, simran etc :p) have splendid looking cars and it's easy to feel a bit down in the mouth when comparing them, let's not forget that for £250 you've got a car which has an awesome thoroughbred (as Luke rightly describes it) engine, is quirky and in the case of yours - being a phase 1 like mine - looks a bit grandad-ish, but has the potential to see of 95% off the Nova brigade at the traffic light grand prix :D

Chin up dude! Post some pics of the offending areas of the car and we'll help.

Adie,

Remember that you have a rare car with pedegree and that it is ~18 years old.

There is enough experience and knowledge on this site to help you out with every job and plenty of spare parts around.

I'll have to post some pictures of my white Phase 1 to give you some inspiration.

A few little jobs to do shouldn't get you down hearted and will be worth it in the end :D

And remember that the Phase 1 is the true performance model of the Bx range and with sleeper appearance can surprise the "what's that, a smokey old diesel" brigade at the traffic lights and on the A roads.

We don't need pumped up bumpers and bodykit to show our pedegree (goes and hides now from the Phase 2 gang :D )

What do you think?

Gone too far?

Sell it and my rover and get a half decent phase 2 for £600?

Cheers

I know someone who has a bumper you can have for free, it's near Manchester. You interested? It's silver at the moment, would be an easy respray.

Tailgate is plastic and easy to repair.

I might have access to rear bumper and some doors for you in the correct colour, will let you know.

Front door pillar seams and rear arch to sill are common but easy to clean up, treat and spray.

By the looks of it, a good clean and T-Cut/polish will make it look like a different car.

Remember that it's a £250 car and get out there and enjoy it :D

Doesn't look too bad, I've certainly had worse cars than that! And for £250 you cant complain.

I bought my ph2 earlier this year for an ebay-bargaintastic price of £360 and I reckon it's the best £360 I've spent on a car ever! Not much (if anything) can touch it in the performance stakes for that sort of money. OK, it's not the best looking BX around, and I've spent maybe £300 on it so far (not all of that was a necessaity though - some just for tarting the car up), but I still love it! In fact I liked it so much I bought another one that me and Kitch and fixing up at the mo :D

The guys on here (and the BX Club) know their stuff and are friendly too, you'll always be able to get advice on whatever you're doing. Stick with it, it'll be worth it in the end!!
