The BX Project

Post by Vanny »

During lockdown 1.0, I revived the BX Project and started blogging about all things cars again, may be of interest to some of the passers-by. I'll update this thread as I add specifically BX content. You can find the Blog here;

I'm not a big car detailing (or even washing) fan, but when the filth builds up, I use Autobrite Purple Rain wheel cleaner. Rear more here;

A New Restoration Project

Image

Ready for the next Automotive Adventure, an opportunity came about I couldn't resist. Now I have a new Citroën BX 16Valve restoration project. It's a little on the crusty side, but given the cars near-death history, its in perfect shape for returning to the road.

CITROËN BX – THE HISTORY OF G553 XPO

Image

Having recently bought a new Citroën BX 16Valve project, I've had a look back over its 31year history. XPO certainly has a story to tell.

Citroën BX – The Mi16 Engine Removal
Perhaps not a conventional start, my first task on this restoration is the removal of the engine so I can work on it in the warm garage.

Citroën BX - Cleaning the engine and gearbox

I don't think I've ever ever seen such filth under the hood of a car. It's time for some cleaning of the engine and gearbox, before tearing it down.

Citroën BX – Cylinder Head Leak Testing

The running engine has arrived up with ~25 BHP missing. Can I find the missing ponies with some cylinder head leak testing alone?

Following this on the project, it gets more and more interesting the deeper you delve into that engine.
Prefer it to the Lamborghini, like Signor Gandini!

CITROËN BX – CYLINDER HEAD OVERHAUL

Can I find the reason for the leaking pressure previously found? Can the leak be fixed with a cylinder head overhaul?

Citroën BX - Bottom End Teardown

Having found a leaking piston ring, it was time to go all-in on this XU9J4 engine and teardown the bottom end. What disasters await?

Citroën BX - Refurbishing The Cylinder Head Parts
Having previously overhauled the cylinder head, it was time to prepare the rest of the parts and maybe start putting some of the engine back together.

Nice to see detailed pictures of the 16v engine, I think the best I have seen.

Citroën BX - Building the Cylinder Head

With all the cylinder head parts cleaned and camshafts polished, I could begin the therapeutic process of building the cylinder head.

CITROËN BX – SPEAKERS AND AMPLIFIER UPGRADE

Taking a little break from the XPO restoration, I've gone just a little bit overboard with upgrade the sound system with Clarion speakers.

New front door speakers, parcel shelf speakers, and the biggest amp I've ever seen.
