random turbo's question
hi folks,
now this may sound stupid but i just dont know anything much about turbo's. now would it be possible to fit almost any turbo to a 16v with some mods?? or would it not work. the reason i ask is i was talking to my bro about the td astra and he said well why dont you just take the alloys, turbo and intercooler off and strap them to the 16v and thought hhmmm not sure if its possible??!! is it? i do have a spare inlet manifold to play with but have no idea if it could work or what would be involved. please tell me as im eager to know. it may just be a fantasy but tis still an interesting idea.
cheers rossco

rosco,
turboing the 16v is not as simple as it sounds. Ive been in talks with my local mechanic about turboing mine and theres a lot involved. also you will have to lower the engines compression ratio before you fit a turbo

hi there,
i thought if the inlet mani in-port was at the front then the turbo would be mounted around where the tb currently is. why would it have to go to the back.??? if its a space reason then wouldn't matter as i would be sticking a hugh turbo intake bonnet vent on anyhow. which make model of car would be a suitable turbo donor anyway? anyone got any ideas?? and how does one go about lowering engine compression and what would the consiqences be if i didnt. is there any knid of ecu adjusting or what is exactly involved?? im very interested and if it didnt cost more than 1000 quid then its garunteed i will do it. if i can do it myself then defo i can probally get a turbo from the scrappers cheaper than you would expect. and yeh im just a friggin nutter! someone please give me all the info as im really interested. you see my car is not going to see the road full time for at least one more year and iam well up for trying out things like turbos etc.
cheers rossco

well remembering i have a year to do it and over that time i could probally pour up to 3k on doing it to be honest. as ive spent 4k in 1.5 years. i dont mind spending the money or time i love doing it. and the thought of having somewhere around 220 bhp in a valver is getting me excited already.

With a boost of max 0.4 with the standard head it's possible. And another ECU like emerald is needed!

Don't bother with a diesel turbo. The steel used in the turbine housing castings and other materials aren't up to the higher exhaust temp's in a petrol engine. The best possible chances of success are looking for a similar sized engine to take the turbo unit from. For good results the turbo's charachtaristics have to closely match the application. Suggest Saab's 16v LP turbocharger.

hi there,
so saabs 16v lp turbo is the one. what model and year can i rip one out of?? as up here saab 900 and 9000turbo's go for 150 all the time as the engine is blown or needs tomuch welding etc. in fact there are a few saabs in the scrappers. and do you have a second choice if i cant get a saab one. ps im getting a superchip for my car in the next 7 days. heheehehe

yup i would think so. even with only a 0.4 boost im sure it will take my car over the 200bhp mark as per i said before im currently awaiting a superchip like jezzies.
