Gear Ratios

Post by jayw »

Used to have a ratios page but can't find it now so can someone tell me the exact ratio for 4th on the standard 16v gearbox. Want to convert BHP @ wheels to flywheel figure.

Cheers! Jay.

Cheers Vanny, that's the one!

Assuming the BX uses the same as the 405 i'm at 154.9, that makes me 5bhp down on stock which ain't bad.

Time to insulate the HT leads i think

Apparently, power is tested in 4th gear as it's normally the gear which closest matches the engine speed 1:1 (in our case 1:0.969).

So for ratio's higher than 1:1 (such as ours) we divide the BHP @ wheels figure by it, in my case 150 bhp / 0.969 = 154.9 bhp.

Or at least according to some website i read it on, it seems to make sense but i don't figure how varying the FD ratio would affect the figures...

It's probably crap

Or did you mean the insulating

On the older RR dynos you only measure at the wheels so some maths is needed to approximate a flywheel figure.
If you got 150BHP at the wheels you are a very lucky man :D
The std 3rd and 4th ratios are not brilliant on the 16v but if you fit the 8v 3rd and 4th you will feel the benefit, if you are a track day warrior then stick the 8v 5th in as well but I kept the std 5th as with the raised rev limit the gap into 5th is not too bad and 120 in 4th is plenty anyway.

Well my HT leads are brand new and they were still frying me everytime i go anywhere near the distributor & they're arcing all over the place round the plugs so i've just wrapped them in a load of insulating tape at both ends and apart from not looking too pretty it's MUCH less lumpy at idle!

May consider shrinkwrapping them a couple of times to improve the looks!
