Looking to change the oil shortly in both the 16v and the td.

I used to use Castrol Magnatec 10/40 for ages and had no problems at all in any BX. I then changed to Fuchs Titan xtr 10/40. Whilst this again has caused no issues,I am not sure if the TD is a tad noisier.

Just interested to know what everyone is using and are there any good offers anywhere.

I use Total semi synthetic 5/40 (I think) never had any bother with it and I get no rattles or tapping from cold.

for the TD i used to use Castrol GTD which deffinately made it quieter and a little quicker on pick up (same grade too) and it didn't seem to vanish quiet as quick as the car lube stuff i used to use!

However, on some good recomendation i know simply look for B3 rated oil (dont put B4 in a TD, and the rating doesn't relate to quality or anything else, just application) and i now buy Chevron diesel oil in 25 litre cans for under £25! Although i can get 4.5 litres of Castrol GTD for £11 again so i'd be tempted to swap back if i where keeping the derv.

Funny you mention this....I've used Fuchs in the valver last time around and I swear its louder than it used to be!

Just picked up some Total 10w40 from GSF so I'll do a change with that soon.

Maybe that is the case then. To be honest, I have not driven the 16v much at all recenlty so cannot say either way there but does seem the td was noiser. I have used Fuchs for the last 3 changes over 18m, if I try something and find an improvement I will advise.

You can't beat GSF for the Total Quartz fully synth 5w40 or 10w40 for the valver.

You can get 10% off the oil as well at GSF with a discount card

How does one get one of these discount cards? I need to buy a few bits to sort some niggles on my car and 10% off would be nice

Hi Luke, I will get Total as you suggest for the valver, it is worth putting a really good oil in.

Yesterday I bought Magnatec Diesel 10/40 for the TD. I have always found Magnatec OK no matter what various pudits have said about it. I have used it for years and I wanted to keep to a 10/40.

Total quartz is great stuff in both guises for petrols, diesels won't be too keen on 10w 40 - a little on the thin side.
GTD is good stuff, but the best I've ever had is Millers XFE, Much quiter from cold and you could feel the smoothness...
Can't be arsed now tho - and just use comma 15 w 40 and they still last foorever..... and its very cheap!!! they also do a full synthetic disel oil which is also very cheap, and more importnatly the correct garde for the XUD rather than the thin and wishy washy as required by more modern engines.
Magnatec is good for shopping cars and theyre noticeably quiter whilst the oil pressure is building on a cold morning. But I'm not convinced that is good for a 16v as I think the money goes on the additive package not the base oil quality, for which I find Comma 10w40 lite is a pretty darn good one for the older 16v with burning issues - Ho Ho. I use nothing but Comma in customers or my own cars, and it allways stays in, doesn't wreck things, and easily outlasts the reccomended intervals. And if you go racing, change it more often!

I use Morris Lubricants 10w40 semi synthetic.

Its made in England too !

(just like marmalade, Japanese cars and, er, probably something else as well )

It works very well and is well priced, especially if you buy it in 25 litre drums.
