16v Alternator

Post by soupapes »

Ok, i have a new problem to solve in my 16v.

The alternator is giving too much voltage when i press the acelerator (about 18V), and today the front lights got burned.

Can the BX 1.4 or 1.6 alternators be mounted on the 16v engine, or is it necessary some special alternator for the 16v engine?

I have in home one from the 1.8Turbo Diesel BX, so can it work with no problem in the 16v engine?

Could it be a problem with the alternator istelf? Regulator?

I think some of the BX diesels are the same type and output. It sounds as though the voltage regulator has gone (it's part of the alternator).

16v have the same 80A generator as the TDs.

Pulley wheel is different from the 55A items found on most petrol BXs.

It sounds like your regulator is shot.

I suggest you do not run the car till it is fixed or you will fry the car's electronics and your battery, not just the light bulbs.

robin, i assume thats quite an early 405 then, the later internal fan alternators wont fit as best i can tell? Would be nice if they can as i'll be off to get a 120amp alternator of a Xantia :D

When we last covered this topic, i thought we found that only 16v aircon models have the 80 amp alternator? Either way its still the regulator thats gone, and they can be bought as a swappable part and repaired your self.

My non aircon BX has the 80A alternator, as did a few others that became spares donors.

The 80A device is made by Mitsubishi IIRC and has an internal fan.

Hi!

I believe its a problem with the regulator, but i dont know if its easy and cheap to repair.

I found out that BX 1.8 Turbo Diesel uses the same alternator model than the 16v engine.

But can i use an alternator from the Xantia Turbo Diesel? Even one with 120amp?

120amp may be a bit ott matey! if the largest one on the aircom model is only 80amp then 120 may be a bit too much!?!?
