Subframe

Cars up on the ramp having the driveshaft changed and the various rusty holes welded up, I notcid that the subrame where it bolts to the body is completely shot and has a hole in it. Poking about im worried how much rust there is on this seemingly tidy car.




Are they specific to the 16v, and has anyone got on that isnt rotten or been welded up.

I'm not 100% certain on the applications of the front subframes but I believe that they are 16v specific.

I sold a mint one to Adrian E 2 years ago at FCS'05. He may still have it and be willing to exchange it for beer tokens, got to be worth droping him a line and finding out.

I do still have it in my garage, and it's not yet mounted up to the phase 1, but I intend to get it done so it's not for sale I'm afraid....

Been trying to find someone to shot blast and powdercoat it, but Surrey/Sussex borders seems to be a tough place to find anyone with the space for the equipment

Since the phase 1 averages 1500 miles a year and lives in a heated garage most of the time the old one hasn't deteriorated at the rate I thought it would - it doesn't even merit an advisory at the MOT! It is very ugly though and covered in dents.....

Tim, have you considered going and taking one off a puggers stripped 16v With the engine out it's actually quite easy to hack one out, less than an hours work I'd reckon.

No worries guys, ive loacted a mk2 16v for £50 which is ideal, will hav eto save up and get it fitted now. on the upside the drievshafts work

I've got one 'abandoned' under cover at work which was salvaged off a 16V a couple of years ago. Believe it's still in good condition but getting it from London may be a bit of a pain.

Where are they based Gary? Have tried a search on Yell without success. I've tried a couple of places locally (one bloke up by the Black Horse who couldn't do a piece that big for shotblasting and doesn't have powdercoating facilities either)

I wandered if that classic resto place round the back of the row opposite John's place might be able to do it, didn't they make the jack adaptors for the racer?

Repair kits can be bought and welded to the subframe. Changing the subframe is a big project.

To be fair its been welded up before an dlooks raher tatty so I would rather get it done and forget about it.

Adrian. Guy by Black Horse is Bray Eng., Matt has coped with blocks, gearboxes and wheels for me. Front subframe is obviously a tad too large.

front subframe is easy as you leave the engine/box hanging on its mountings,and also leave the steering rack attatched to the car and just remove the rack mountting bolts,and leave most of the hydraulic pipes conected to the car except the front brake pipes,also if you can find a company which dose soda blasting it is enviromentaly freindly and it leaves a coatting on the clean surface which will stop it going russty whilst its sitting around in bear metal,which is whashed of before you coat it
