Okay so i didnt think it would be me ever saying this but,
In tesco getting some lunch on the way to the inlaws earlier int he week, looking at the mags, spotted max with a 900bhp mustang on the cover, thought nice so picked it up and looked ont he back of the plastic envelope, and, No mad kitted cars! No topless ladies, No chavs!! thought s#d it why not, I have to say i am quite impressed! (i hitnk its had a price drop too!) the articles are good, well written! there are no chav'ed up corsa's etc! infatc in this issue there are rusty 'rat look' vw's! editors comments are good too! 'about time you didnt have to see the smae things done to the same cars' and its lost half thethickness of all the ads! and inside, no ladies draped over the cars either!! and the extra section that came with it '50 cars worth buying' is actualy pretty good! genuine cars wortthy of buying not chav'd up cr#p!! I am really suprised! Worthy of a look if you have the spare cash!
is this the return of the max of old????????

Max power have really changed, I used to get the odd mag when it first appeared, and it was well written then with good articles and a sparse smattering of the female form dotted about.

It went seriously wrong with the content for many years, and was utter rubbish, but now...well I've not read it at all, but I know a few who work freelance for the publisher.

They made a big decision to change direction recently, and lost many readers (the chav clan mainly), but thankfully it appears to have paid of, it apparently is seen as a serious tuner magazine for many and has dumped the chav image. Not my cup of tea really, but glad it shed the shite image it had.

I remember buying the first ever copy of Max power, if I remember corectly it came in a A3 sized packet, with a cardboard steering wheel and a poster of 2 gorgeous Escort Cossies, which I guess dates it to around 92/93 ish.

I moved onto Revs a good few years ago, but very rarely buy any car mag these days, don;t even know if Revs is still around, but when Max power had it's head in the clouds, Revs appeared to be what Max power started out as, ie some more grounded projects that mere mortals could afford.

Have to say, the mag was absolutely nothing like it used to be! no real resembelance except for the filth phone lines in the back!
the articles seem to be written by people who can write unlike the old mag loL! was a little shocked!! have to say its actually a good read! and i dont think i would be ashamed to say i bought it anymore! although i am not going to make a habbit of it loL!
tend to stick to Performance French cars (used to be Pgti!) and Stuff mag nowadays!!

Edit,
i meant ot say, its been 5 years since i read Max! last time i wasnt very impressed lol! and close to years since i bought one :D

Saw the same mag (Mustang) and was VERY tempted to buy it. It was just the though of handing it to the girl on the checkout with a sheepish look on my face that put me off. Funny how that never happened when I bought jazz mags when I was 15........

Think I might give it a go. 8)

Blimey Luke, I thought you were just a young whippersnapper, I think I've still got Mr Vizards "Theory and Practice of Cylinder Head Modificaction" tucked away in a tea chest in my loft somewhere, used it to to "improve" my MG 1100 powered mini head, and that was 30+ years ago, that book taught me a lot about the physics of cylinderhead airflow. I was also an avid subscriber to C&CC, ooh for those halcyon days of Webbers, Techlamit Jackson fuel injection & 5 star, and the only electronics in the car then were in the cassette player.

Funnily enough Martyn our bungalow is called "Halcyon" and I am quite young at 37 :D
Cut my teeth on the A series with Vizards bibles and his "How to modify your mini".
I love carbs too if I was building a new engine for my valver it would have a BV head with twin 45s there is no sound from TBs that beats the bark from sidedraughts

You're right about the sound of a pair of open Dcoe's, I regularly took the airbox off my Elan and went out in search of walled lanes and railway tunnels. One Sunday morning after the regular balancing ritual (it never really needed doing) I went out minus the bonnet, Wow what a georgeous sound that made :D

Funny yoiu mebtion the elan Martyn - my bros father inlaw Mick is always playing with some car or another nad currentky he has an elan engine stripped down and took great delight in telling me about it, BV head twin 40s etc all neatly laid out in his garage his mate has a bit of a special something to do with late models and spyder chassis,or something along hose line, probably means more to you than me but I am looking forward to seeing it all back together again.

Not mine but nearly identical except mine had 1600E gold, bumpers & wider Elan +2 wheels, I had 15 good years out of it, unfortunately it now resides in my garage & loft after headbutting a lampost 19yrs ago. Bought a new Spyder chassis and built that up with all new running gear, completely gutted the body ready to graft on a new front, and thats as far as I got, it's been clogging my garage space ever since. Every year I vow to sell it on, but I've still got it, maybe this year, 'cause I'm never gonna finnish it.

Not my chassis, mine doesn't have the engine installed.

Is the spyder chassis different to what your Elan came with, or is it identical?

That's a massive shame you haven't been able to get it up and running, it is a truly beautiful old school british sportscar.

Hi Dan, the Spyder chassis is a tubular spaceframe interpratation of Lotus's sheet steel chassis and is both lighter and stiffer and improves on the original in many areas and includes pick up points for their double wishbone rear end & rollbars.
